QUETTA: Around three dozen journalists and media workers have been tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Quetta during last few days. The journalists who were tested positive for the deadly virus include four bureau chiefs of leading private TV channels, reporters, cameramen and other media workers.

According to a list prepared by the Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) obtained by the Daily Quetta Voice, 35 journalists and media professionals have been tested positive for Covid-19 in Quetta city. The journalists working in interior Balochistan are yet to be tested and reported by the health department.

“Journalists are at their homes with their families in isolation”, Ayub Tareen, the President BUJ told daily Quetta Voice via telephone. Mr. Tareen was also tested positive and has been battling the virus for last one week at his residence. “Thank God, my condition has improved”, he said.

Journalists in Balochistan have been reporting the coronavirus from February this year from Pak-Iran border Taftan to Quetta when the Zaireen started entering from Iran into Pakistan. The journalists in Quetta remained frequent visitors of quarantine centers established in Quetta’s Hazar Ganji area to report the unfolding stories about the covid19.

“We did not see day and night and reported all unfolding stories”, Khurram Shehzad, a cameraman working with a private TV channel told daily Quetta Voice. Despite risks, the journalists continued their jobs and still reporting all stories related to the coronavirus. The number of journalists tested positive in Quetta appears to be high across the country despite being less in number.
