Syed Ali Shah:
QUETTA: A round table conference was convened to discuss the recent fire at Government Science College, Quetta. Political leaders in attendance included Asghar Khan Achakzai, Provincial President of the Awami National Party (ANP), Nasrullah Zarai of Pashtun Khwa National Awami Party, and Aslam Baloch from the National Party. The participants condemned the incident and voiced concerns over the inadequacy of the measures taken in response.
Asghar Khan Achakzai stressed the importance of a thorough investigation to uncover all aspects of the tragedy, emphasizing the need for transparency. “The actions taken so far are insufficient,” he stated, calling for an independent inquiry that includes student representation on the investigative committee.
The leaders highlighted the broader impact of the fire on Balochistan’s education system, underlining the need for urgent reforms. “With thousands of students enrolled at Government Science College, there remains a glaring lack of basic services, such as a student bus and operational hostel facilities,” Achakzai pointed out.
Concerns about the growing security presence in educational institutions were also raised. Achakzai demanded the immediate withdrawal of forces from Balochistan University and called for an end to the restrictions on student unions, urging their reinstatement.
Addressing wider regional issues, Achakzai condemned the ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan and appealed to the United Nations for action.
The leaders issued a warning, stating that if their demands for a comprehensive investigation and improvements in the education sector are not fulfilled within a month, they will take serious steps in response.
