A deadly crash between a coaster and a train left 20 people dead in Punjab province’s Sheikhupura area on Friday.

Mohammad Ghazi Salahuddin, the District Police Officer (DPO) Sheikhupura while talking to reporters, said that 25-26 people were travelling in the coach, out of whom 20 had been killed in the accident. The victims included women and children as well.

According to the DPO, the passengers in the coaster were Sikh Yatrees who were returning from Nankana Sahib — where they had gone to visit relatives — to Peshawar. He added that there were two more coaches that took a different route and are safely on their way. Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid has ordered authorities to take immediate action against those responsible for the accident.

When the incident occurred

Rescue officials from both Railways and Rescue 1122 have arrived on the scene of the accident and are shifting the injured and the dead to nearby hospitals, the statement added. All divisional officials have been directed to arrive at crash site.

Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid has ordered authorities to take immediate action against those responsible for the accident.

According to media reports, most of the passengers in the coaster were Sikh Yatrees who were returning from Nankana Sahib.
