The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has imposed a ban on the use, sale, purchase, and manufacturing of the polythene bags in Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan province. The use of polythene bags is an offense as per the Balochistan Environmental Protection Act, a notification issued by the EPA mentioned.
Anyone who contravenes shall be liable to be penalized under BEPA act and fines have also been fixed under the act. The EPA notification says large scale business units cant be fined from Rs. 100,000 to 500,000 rupees, medium-size business units can be fined Rs. 80,000 to 200,000 rupees and small scale business units can be fined Rs. 20,000 to 150,000 rupees. “Fine can be imposed by district administration and police”, Saboor Kakar, the Secretary Environment Balochistan told the daily Quetta Voice.
The EPA has directed metropolitan corporation, district administration and police make sure strict implementation of the order since its use causes environmental impacts for people.
“We are trying to make sure implementation of all environmental laws”, Mr. Kakar said.
Soon after the notification, the Administrator Quetta, Tariq Javed Mengal and other officials visited various parts of the city and warned the business community that polythene bags must not be used. The traders violating the orders of the government would be fined, Mr. Mengal informed the business community on Wednesday.
