Heavy monsoon rainfall has played havoc in various parts of Balochistan on Sunday. Torrential rains have claimed 9 lives in Dera Bugti, Khuzdar, Kohlu, Jaffarabad and other districts of the province, Imran Zarkoon, the Director-General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) told the daily Quetta Voice via telephone.
Continued rainfall has damaged 142 mud-walled homes in Jhal Magsi, Jaffarabad, Naseerabad, Kohlu, Khuzdar and other parts of the province. The PDMA has dispatched blankets, tents, food items and other necessary commodities to the affected areas.
The Balochistan government has already declared 12 districts sensitive in terms of heavy rainfall in the province. Currently, monsoon spell continued in 25 districts of Balochistan. However, Naseerabad and Sibi divisions have been hit hard by the prevailing spell of rains.
Heavy rainfall has damaged dozens of bridges and roads in interior Balochistan, causing the suspension of traffic. A bridge was severely damaged at coastal high and in district Kachhi Bolan that caused the suspension of traffic in the two districts.
Spokesman government of Balochistan, Liaquat Shahwani said 300 people stranded in various parts of the province have been evacuated and shifted to safer places. Mr. Shahwani stated that chief minister Balochistan Jam Kamal was personally monitoring the situation with regard to heavy rainfall in the province.
The administration in all district headquarters have been directed to open the roads and rescue the stranded people, Mr. Shahwani said in a statement on Sunday evening.
