QUETTA: A powerful explosion struck a passenger shuttle train near Chaman Phatak in Quetta on Sunday morning, leaving at least 14 people dead and several others injured, while causing widespread destruction in the surrounding area.
According to officials, the shuttle train was traveling from Quetta Cantonment toward the city railway station when the explosion occurred shortly after 8:00 AM. Authorities confirmed that among those killed were three personnel of the Frontier Corps, while women and children were also reported among the injured.
The blast scene quickly turned chaotic as emergency responders, rescue teams, and local residents rushed to assist victims. Bodies of the deceased were shifted to hospitals, while injured passengers and civilians were evacuated for urgent medical treatment.
In response to the incident, authorities declared a medical emergency across Quetta hospitals, directing doctors, paramedics, and medical staff to report for immediate duty to handle the growing number of casualties.
The impact of the explosion extended beyond the train, leaving visible destruction across the area. Several train coaches were badly damaged, with reports indicating derailment and overturned compartments. Nearby vehicles caught fire or were severely damaged due to the intensity of the blast.
Residents living close to the site said the explosion shattered windows, damaged walls and roofs, and left several houses partially destroyed. Families in the affected neighborhood described scenes of panic and fear as the sound of the blast echoed across different parts of the city.
Many local residents expressed deep distress over the damage to their homes and personal property, including vehicles destroyed in the incident. Some affected families appealed to the government for immediate support, compensation, and assistance to rebuild their lives after the destruction.
Security forces, police, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), and bomb disposal teams secured the area and began collecting evidence as authorities launched an investigation into the nature of the explosion.
Officials stated that senior provincial leadership was closely monitoring the situation, while rescue and relief efforts continued at the site.
