Declining quality of education in Balochistan

Quality education remains a main concern for the parents, teachers, and government across Pakistan. Poor quality of education is a major drawback of the educational system in the country.
However, quality of education paints a bleak picture when it comes to Balochistan. A recent report by this daily revealed only 0.8 percent of students managed to score A + grade in middle-level examinations 2019-20. As per the statistics of Balochistan Assessment and Examinaiton Commission (BAEC), 322 students out of a total 42,823 students got A+ grade in the examination.
Education may be the constitutional right of every individual between the age of 5 to 16 years. However, getting children to school has proven to be a challenge for the government.
No student secured A + grade in 9 districts of Balochistan
As per the BAEC report, no student secured A + grade in 9 districts of Balochistan. The districts include Barkhan, Harnai, Kachi, Kharan, Musakhail, Nushki, Sherani, Killa Abdullah, and Sikandar Abad.
However, Balochistan’s Loralai district stood first since 100 students from Residential College got A + grade. Similarly, Khuzdar Residential College’s 67 students got an A + grade. In District Zhob, 55 students obtained an A + grade and most of the students were from BRC.
Majority of the students passed examination in D grade
The report further reveals that the majority of the students 25,291 passed the examination in D grade. The number of boys who appeared in the examination was 28,379. However, the number of girls students was 14,444. This means 66.3% of boys and 33.7 % of girls participated in the examination.
As far as examinations are concerned, in the best educational systems around the globe, examinations in this age are considered harassing and demotivating for students. Students have to complete the minimum education standards of 12 years under the National Education Policy and constitution without hurdle.
Most of the education budget is spent on salaries of teachers
It is irony of fate that most of the education budget is spent on salaries of teachers rather than promotion of education. Teachers need to be imparted modern training as the requirement of modern digital era.
Particularly, the recruitment process of teachers need to be streamlined and fair. It has been observed that there is a lack of mathematics and science teachers. The education department should ensure better training for all newly appointed teachers through the Balochistan Public Service Commission and CTSP. This will help in the improvement of quality education in the province.
