Khawaja Asif arrested by NAB

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday arrested the former defense minister and central leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), Khawaja Muhammad Asif. NAB sources said Khawaja Asif arrested in a corruption case. NAB arrested him from Islamabad.

According to initial information, NAB has arrested Mr. Khawaja Asif in assets beyond known sources. The anti-corruption bureau has earlier summoned the former defense minister in an inquiry. But, Mr. Asif failed to appear before the court despite a notice. The spokesperson said Asif held an iqama (work permit) from 2004 to 2008, adding that he earned a total of Rs136 million for his services as a consultant legal adviser.

According to NAB, evidence shows Asif established the Kent Housing Society, which has been operating illegally.

Maryam Nawaz condemns the arrest

Vice-President PML N, Maryam Nawaz has strongly condemned the arrest of former defense minister Khawaja Asif and termed it political victimization. She said rulers were punishing Khawaja for what she called his support and loyalty to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Maryam Nawaz said NAB arrested Khawaja Asif when he was leaving for a TV show.
