Closure of Balochistan University enters third week

The closure of the University of Balochistan entered the third week on Tuesday. Faculty members and employees of the province’s oldest university have been protesting against the non-payment of salaries.

“We have not been paid salaries for the last three months”, Professor Kaleemullah Bareech, the central leader of the academic staff association said.

The faculty members and employees of the UoB staged a protest demonstration and demanded of the government to make sure an immediate payment of salaries.

The protesting employees and faculty members have locked all departments including the administrative block to mount pressure on the government to ensure the payment of salaries to the employees.

“This is strange that the government is merely taking notices and not paying funds to the university”, Nazeer Ahmed Lehri, another leader of the academic staff association said. He said the government was least bothered about the state of education and the future of thousands of students.

Universities in Balochistan including the UoB, Balochistan University of Information Technology Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), and University Law College have been facing serious financial crises for the last few months.

The teaching staff and employees of the universities are on the roads and demanding salaries. “Our rulers are playing with the future of students”, Nazeer Lehri said.

Niamatullah Kakar, another office-bearer of the employees association lamented that all political parties were also least concerned about the plight of employees and students.
