Dawood Ahmed: 

The Pakistan National Assembly passed controversial amendments to cybercrime laws, introducing strict penalties for spreading fake news online.

Key Features of the Amendment

•Up to 3 years imprisonment and Rs2 million fine for fake or false information.

•Creation of a Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority to regulate online platforms.

•Mandatory registration and compliance for social media platforms.

Opposition and Journalist Protests

Journalists and PTI lawmakers protested the bill, citing threats to freedom of speech. The opposition Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam also opposed the legislation.

Digital Nation Pakistan Bill Passed

The assembly also approved the “Digital Nation Pakistan Bill, 2024,” aiming to centralize citizens’ data and promote digital governance.

Criticism from Media Bodies

Media organizations strongly opposed the amendments, calling for greater consultation and warning of potential restrictions on press freedom.
