RDMC Inaugurates Solar-Powered RO Plant in Chagai to Provide Safe Drinking Water

Durban Chah, Chagai – June 3, 2024: The Reko Diq Mining Company (RDMC) has inaugurated its fourth solar-powered Reverse Osmosis (RO) water plant in Durban Chah, a village in District Chagai, Balochistan. This initiative aims to provide clean and safe drinking water to local communities and is a key milestone in RDMC’s commitment to sustainable, community-led development. The project was proposed and planned by the local Par-e-Koh Community Development Committee (CDC), demonstrating RDMC’s inclusive approach to addressing essential needs in partnership with stakeholders on the ground.

The newly installed RO plant, powered entirely by solar energy, has a production capacity of 10,000 gallons per day and is equipped with state-of-the-art water purification technology. Before its installation, residents of Durban Chah relied on water sources with dangerously high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels ranging from 2,000 to 2,500 mg/l, far above the threshold considered safe for human consumption. With the new RO system in place, TDS levels have been reduced to between 200 and 230 mg/l, aligning with national and international health standards for potable water.

The plant was officially inaugurated by RDMC General Manager Ryan Mitchell, who was joined by local residents and CDC representatives. The event highlighted RDMC’s dedication to delivering high-impact, locally informed solutions that directly improve the quality of life in remote areas of Balochistan. This marks the fourth solar-powered RO plant commissioned by RDMC in Chagai, following earlier installations in the villages of Humai, Nok Chah, and Mashki Chah—all designed to ensure long-term water sustainability amid ongoing challenges with the local power grid.

RDMC’s broader social investment strategy prioritizes water security, education, vocational training, and healthcare access. Through partnerships with organizations such as the Hunar Foundation and the Indus Hospital & Health Network, RDMC is implementing programs that support human development in underserved regions. All of these efforts are guided by local Community Development Committees to ensure that development planning remains inclusive, transparent, and responsive to community needs.
