Quetta: The Forest & Wildlife Department of the Government of Balochistan and Reko Diq Mining Company (RDMC) have taken a significant step toward collaboration on climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and natural resource management.
A high-level meeting held on April 22 at Quetta Serena Hotel was chaired by Secretary Forest & Wildlife Imran Gichki, with participation from senior RDMC officials including Head of Sustainability Ashley Price, Country Manager Zarrar Jamali, and Senior Advisor Ahmer. Senior forestry, wildlife, and soil conservation officials also attended.
The meeting served as an initial engagement to explore joint environmental initiatives in District Chagai and Rakhshan Division, areas facing increasing climate-related challenges such as desertification and ecosystem degradation.
Key Climate and Environmental Focus Areas
During the session, the department presented its Integrated Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Programme, outlining priority interventions:
Reforestation and forest conservation.
Rangeland rehabilitation.
Shelterbelt plantations.
Desertification control strategies.
Wildlife habitat restoration and biodiversity protection.
Officials highlighted that the program is designed to address climate change impacts, restore degraded landscapes, and strengthen local community resilience through sustainable, long-term solutions.
Advancing Sustainable Development in Balochistan
The department also emphasized ongoing efforts to expand green cover in arid zones to mitigate climate risks, enhance biodiversity, and promote ecological balance.
RDMC officials appreciated the initiative, stating it aligns with the company’s sustainability framework and environmental responsibility goals.
Toward a Public-Private Climate Partnership
Both sides expressed commitment to developing a structured partnership aimed at advancing climate adaptation, environmental protection, and sustainable development in Balochistan.
