Balochistan Assembly has demanded of the federal government to provide Rs.50 billion for the flood-affected people of the province. The house adopted a unanimous resolution on Monday seeking financial assistance from the federal government for the rehabilitation of the flood’s affectees. The house adopted the resolution as the death toll rose to 200 on Monday across Balochistan.
Asad Baloch, the Balochistan Minister for Agriculture presented the resolution. Both treasury and opposition benches supported the resolution. “Floods caused massive destruction in Balochistan”, Mr. Baloch said while speaking on the feasibility of the resolution.
The members spoke at length about the damages caused by floods in Balochistan and demanded of the federal government to announce a special package in this regard. The session of the provincial assembly resumed here with acting speaker Sardar Babar Musakhail in the chair.
“Floods swept away bridges”
“Floods swept away bridges, roads, and dams in the province”, Asad Baloch mentioned. He said the province has no resources to rehabilitate the flood-affected people and launch a reconstruction process to restore the infrastructure.
The lawmakers said the province has surpassed all records in terms of heavy rainfall. “People will die of hunger if the federal government did not announce any package”, Asghar Tareen, the Jamiat ul Ulema e Islam (JUI) member said. Mr. Tareen urged all political parties to join hands to mount pressure on the federal government to announce a special package for the flood affectees of Balochistan.
Crops over 5,00,000 acres of land destroyed
Lawmakers said the whole province was affected by torrential rains and standing crops on over 5,00,000 acres of land were destroyed because of floods and rains. Floods destroyed grapes, dates, apple orchards and vegetables throughout the province.
“Government should financially support growers of the province”, Asghar Tareen demanded. He said growers in Pishin have suffered huge financial losses because of continued monsoon rainfall.
