Quetta: The Balochistan High Court has taken strong action to combat gas theft and directed authorities to ensure uninterrupted gas supply with proper pressure for domestic consumers during winter. The decision came during the dismissal of a petition filed by Advocate Syed Nazir Ahmad Agha on behalf of the Federation of Pakistan through the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources.
A two-member bench, comprising Justice Muhammad Kamran Khan Malakhil and Justice Shaukat Ali Rukhshani, ordered SSGCL officials, including the Chief Engineer, Manager Billing, and Manager (Legal), to install pulling machines on gas pipelines to monitor flow. The court also instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Quetta to form a special team for conducting surveys and taking legal action against illegal gas connections.
The court emphasized the need to curb the sale of unauthorized gas accessories, directing the Deputy Commissioner and SSGCL representatives to establish a procedure for regulating their sale and supply. DIG Police Quetta has been tasked with providing assistance for enforcement measures.
The judges highlighted that habitual offenders and violators of gas-related laws must face strict legal action without leniency. They also stressed prioritizing adequate gas pressure for domestic users during the winter season.
A copy of the order has been forwarded to the Advocate General and Assistant Attorney General to ensure compliance. The next hearing is scheduled for December 24, 2024.
