QUETTA – A young couple from Mastung, Balochistan, has appealed to authorities for protection, citing threats to their lives following their court marriage. Nisar Ahmed and Amna Bibi, who tied the knot on July 30 in a Quetta court, held a press conference at the Quetta Press Club to raise alarm over the threats and harassment they are facing from the bride’s family.
According to Nisar, the couple is being targeted after choosing to marry without family approval. He claimed that Amna’s father, Qadir Bakhsh Shalani, along with other relatives, has filed a kidnapping case against him and has been issuing death threats over the phone.
“My in-laws are threatening us with serious consequences. If anything happens to us, Qadir Bakhsh Shalani will be responsible,” Nisar told reporters, urging the government and law enforcement agencies to intervene and ensure their safety.
This press conference comes in the wake of a deeply troubling incident in the same region, where a man and woman were brutally murdered in the name of honor. The couple’s plea highlights the continuing danger faced by individuals who exercise their legal and constitutional right to marry by choice in areas where such actions can provoke deadly retaliation.
The couple stressed their desire to live peacefully and demanded legal protection so they can begin their married life without fear. Human rights activists have called for swift action, warning that the growing number of honor-based threats and killings signals a need for urgent legal enforcement and awareness in Balochistan.
