Balochistan Governor, Civil Society Discuss Media Freedom & Journalist Safety

Qaseem Shah:

Quetta – A 10-member delegation of journalists and civil society representatives from Individualland Pakistan (IL) met Governor Balochistan Jaffar Khan Mandokhel at the Governor’s House to discuss media freedom, journalist safety, and human rights in Balochistan.

The engagement was held under the European Union-funded project Strengthening Media Persons’ Capacity and Engagement for Fundamental Human Rights, jointly implemented by the Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI) and IL. The meeting was facilitated by Khoso Saifullah, IL’s Integrated Operations & Program Manager.

Media Freedom Challenges in Balochistan

Delegates highlighted the growing risks to independent journalism in Pakistan, especially in Balochistan, where reporters face restrictions, threats, and lack of institutional support. They stressed the urgent need for stronger collaboration between media organizations, civil society, and the government to ensure an open and safe environment for press freedom.

Saifullah emphasized that with the support of the Governor’s office, efforts to enhance media literacy in Pakistan could be expanded, enabling citizens to become more responsible news consumers and strengthening democratic governance.

Governor Reaffirms Support for Freedom of Expression

Governor Mandokhel welcomed the delegation’s recommendations, reaffirming the provincial government’s commitment to freedom of expression in Balochistan. He said, “The media department in our province remains strong and continues to attract students every year. We agree on upgrading the curriculum and will send recommendations to the Higher Education Commission (HEC).”

Civil Society Raises Concern Over Refugee Students

Civil society members also voiced concern about the impact of Pakistan’s recent repatriation policy on refugee students studying in universities across Balochistan. Dr. Aziz, a civil society representative, stressed the need for a policy framework to protect refugee students’ right to education.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue dialogue between government officials, civil society, and journalists to promote press freedom, human rights, and democratic accountability in Balochistan.
