Balochistan: Prison department without IG for last more than one month

Syed Ali Shah :

Balochistan’s prison department is without the inspector general (IG) for last more than a month. On April 23rd, the Services tribunal Balochistan had suspended the positing notification of inspector general prisons department Balochistan. The tribunal suspended the notification order on the application of Malik Shuja Uddin Kasi, an officer of the prisons department in grade-20.

Absence of a prison chief causing problems

The absence of the prison chief has caused administrative issues, transfers, postings, and other financial issues, sources in the home and tribal affairs department said. Currently, there is one grade-20 officer and two grade-19 officers within the prison cadre with experience of more than two decades.

Balochistan has 11 districts, central jails with 2,400 inmates

Balochistan has 11 central and district jails with 2,400 inmates. “I have been knocking doors of the home department for a minor work”, a lower grade employee of the prisons department told Quetta Voice. This was the work of the prison chief to address my issue, he lamented.

The employee requested anonymity since he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Posting of officers from other departments have developed a sense of deprivation

The posting of officers from PSP police and Balochistan services groups has developed a sense of deprivation among the officers of the prison department. “Prison cadre officers can perform well because of their experiences”, an officer of the department said. He also requested anonymity.

Based on this, the Balochistan High Court (BHC) and the Services Tribunal had suspended the posting orders of the prisons chief from outside the department in the past.

Despite repeated calls, this scribe failed to speak to the Home Minister Balochistan, Mir Ziaullah Langove, and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) regarding the issue.
