Major Power breakdown across Pakistan

Most parts of the country witnessed a major power breakdown on Saturday night. Major cities of the country including Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and other areas plunged into darkness.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Omar Ayub, the Federal Minister for Water and Power said that investigations were ongoing to ascertain the cause of the breakdown at Guddu power plant that had plunged the country into darkness. Power supply to main cities restored after hectic efforts by the concerned quarters. “We have ordered an investigation into the sudden technical fault in Guddu transmission line”, the Federal Minister stated.

The power supply to Quetta also restored. However, blackout persists in the district headquarters, tehsils, and villages of the province that covers half of the country in terms of area.

News channels reported that 80 percent area of Karachi, the country’s largest city plunged into the darkness. Federal Minister Information, Shibli Faraz said technical fault at NTDC has caused major power breakdown in the country. The minister took to Twitter and said efforts are on to restore power supply.

The spokesman of the power division in Islamabad termed technical fault as the main reason behind major power breakdown. The frequency fallen from 50% to 0%, the Spokesman stated.

On a war-footing basis, efforts are on to restore power supply to all parts of the country.

Most parts of Balochistan plunged into darkness

In Balochistan, Quetta, Pishin, Sibi, Mastung, Kalat, and other parts of the province suddenly plunged into darkness. The officials initially termed technical fault as the underlying reason behind the sudden major power breakdown in the country. The sources in Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) told Quetta Voice that power supply to the provincial capital and in over two dozen districts of Balochistan. They said that a technical fault at Guddo transmission line has caused the disruption of the power supply to most parts of Balochistan.

Apart from Balochistan, major power breakdown has also been reported from Islamabad, Rawalpindi and other parts of the country.
